FEUTEU is delighted to present Under Her Gaze, work by female photographers linked by a desire to fight discrimination in both art and life. Tackling ideals of female beauty, feminist photography has tried to change public consciousness on the objectification of women whilst examining domestic roles and views of self.
Cindy Sherman, Shirin Neshat, Marilyn Minter, Nan Goldin, Juno Calypso, Ellen Von Unwerth, and Linder Sterling are some of the pioneering female photographers that have shaped understanding of female rights and challenges, drawing from life or by reproducing metaphorical scenarios.
Nan Goldin highlights the lives of socially marginalised groups as well as a number of feminist issues, working mostly with images of the body.
Shirin Neshat evokes the 21st-century lives of Islamic women and the oppression that religion and tradition impose on them. Her work is a daring take on femininity under male authority.
With a different approach, Marilyn Minter draws the imagery of fashion, advertising, and pornography, while referencing the history of art, to create subversive pictures about looking and the female figure in visual culture.
Similarly Ellen Von Unwerth creates stunning erotic imagery which, celebrates femininity whilst Cindy Sherman examines and distorts femininity as a social construct.
Through these different ways of seeing these heroines of feminist photography have contributed to the understanding of both female repression and expression.
