Feuteu is delighted to present a selection of artworks by Stefanie Schneider (b. 1968) a German photographer and video artist living and working between Berlin and Los Angeles.
Being most well known for her feature film, art piece 29 PALMS, CA, (2014) Schneider’s images are a combination between muted and pale colours, diffuse light, perhaps overexposed, blurred in the wide shot, sharp in detail. Close-ups alternate with landscapes, brightly coloured portraits from pop culture appear alongside unknown figures, nudes mix with cowboys.
Schneider mainly works with mutations of expired Polaroid film stock. Chemical explosions of color spreading across the surfaces undermine the photograph's commitment to reality and induce her characters into trance-like dream- scapes. Like flickering sequences of old road movies Schneider's images seem to evaporate before conclusions can be made - their ephemeral reality manifesting in subtle gestures and mysterious motives. Her imaginary refuses to succumb to reality, they keep alive the confusions of dream, desire, fact, and fiction.
In an essay, Adi Hoesle stated: “The Polaroid films which she uses have already become damaged; they have gone past their expiration date; they are in a state of physical decomposition, caught in their own passing away―just as we ourselves in our earthly existence have only a limited “shelf life.” Our life is limited, Stefanie Schneider wishes to tell us, but it is nonetheless a beautiful dream!”
