"I realized that something was missing in my work: I wasn’t dealing with the intense colors and the brilliant light of these worlds, so different from the gray-brown reticence of my New England background. As a result, I started to photograph in color, and have done so ever since. This image from a smoky Grenada bar- whose vibrant red, green, and yellow ar the colors of this Caribbean nation’s flag- helped show me the way. Ultimately this picture became the cover of my fist book, Hot Light/Half-Made Worlds.”
